Here in Minnesota we are entering into the coldest time of the year. As temperatures reach below zero and you dream of Spring, it can be hard to find activities to keep your family entertained.

In preparation for the upcoming months of February and March, here are my top five favorite winter family activities that everyone will love!

Baking

I remember when I was a little girl, I loved baking with my mom. Baking was an introduction to independence and basic life skills made exciting by the anticipation of a sweet treat. It also provides you the opportunity to sneak in some lessons about measuring ingredients and the importance of cleaning up as you go. Whether you share an old family recipe, or try something new, baking is the perfect winter activity!

Look through old family photos

So many stories can be found in family photos. Share these stories with your kids by looking through old family photos. Pull out your wedding photos, old pictures of your kids, and ask your parents, or grandparents to share their photo albums with you. This provides you an opportunity to share family history that can be cherished for years to come.

Share a favorite old TV show or movie

To this day, some of my favorite movies and TV shows are those that my parents enjoyed as kids. Take a step back in time and share part of your childhood by watching those old movies and TV shows together as a family!

Go to the gym

It can be difficult to get enough exercise during winter months. Both adults and children can enjoy the gym for some much needed movement. Play basketball, soccer, or just run around on the court. If your kids are old enough, you could also show them how to use the exercise equipment!

Have a karaoke night

Music creates bonds. Share your favorite songs with your kids, and have your kids share their favorite music with you. No special equipment is needed, just a speaker, and if you’re feeling fancy, a microphone (or something that resembles one).
