A Simple Strategy to Overcome Drifting

How easy it is to just get up and start your day going through the motions without even giving thought to how you want to spend the day. Sure you have to go to work, you have to drive the kids to their activities after school, and make dinner, but you have so many choices that we oftentimes don’t even consider that when but if we’re intentional with these choices, they can change the trajectory of our life.
Time goes by so fast and seems to go even faster the older I get. I don’t want to get 10 or 20 years down the road and realize that I didn’t use the moments I was given to live the life I was created to live. We were created with potential beyond our wildest imaginations. We can create a beautiful life. We can speak words of truth and love to our kids, spouses, and friends. We can travel the world with our families and experience adventures together. We were created for more.
So how do we be more intentional about our lives with everything we’ve got on our plates? Since I’ve been practicing this more, I’ve found some important steps for success:
Be clear about where you are today. Really examine your life and are you constantly tired or stressed? Are you committed to things that you don’t need to be and really don’t align with your vision for your best life? Are you enjoying life the way you always hoped you would with your family? Sure we have seasons in our life where things may be incredibly tough due to a medical issue or other pressing concern but be really clear about where you are today in all aspects of your life: faith, family, friends, career, hobbies, personal development, etc.
Think big and determine where you want to go. It’s much easier to drift through life and get sidetracked when we don’t have a clear vision for our best life. What do you want it to look like? What does your time spent with your husband and family look like? What does your home look like? What’s the feel of your home? What does your company or career look like? What have you always had a nudge to do but have been too nervous to make it a reality or explore further?
Reverse engineer your success. Now that you have your vision clearly established, what would have to be true to make that vision a reality? And begin to work backwards from the vision to where you are today and begin to plot out your path forward. When we have a clear vision of where we’re going, even the smallest steps can feel like great progress.
Let that vision begin to be your point in the distance of where you’re moving towards. You may get off track every now and then but with a clear vision of where you’re going, it’ll be much easier to get back on track and know that you’re being intentional with your time and energy.
So what is it that you want to be more intentional about? What are the dreams and goals you’ve been too afraid to dream about but believe you may have been created for? How will you take steps every day to pursue those?
