How I Organize My Wallet: Business on One Side, Personal on the Other

Fall is when my calendar fills back up. School schedules, client travel, year-end deadlines, and the holidays right behind them.

It's also when I notice the small things that slow a day down. For me, one of the biggest was the moment at checkout when I couldn't find the right card. The line is waiting, the card I need is under three others, and my business card looks exactly like my personal one.

It sounds minor. But when you run two companies and a household of six, minor things add up. So I built a system, and I designed a wallet to hold it. Here's exactly how I organize mine.

My system: business on one side, personal on the other

The Marie Wallet has card slots on both sides of the interior. I use one entire side for business and the other entire side for personal. That one decision ends the guessing.

The business side holds every card tied to the company. When I'm paying for a client lunch or booking travel, I open to that side and everything I need is there.

The personal side holds my personal debit card, my personal credit card, and my driver's license. My insurance cards live here too, each in its own slot, so they're easy to hand over at an appointment.

The back pocket is my favorite detail. There's a slip pocket on the outside of the wallet, and I keep the card I use most in it. For everyday purchases, I never have to unzip the wallet at all.

Cash and coins go in the center. The bill compartments keep cash flat and sorted, and the center zip pocket holds coins and receipts so nothing loose rattles around.

Set up your own in ten minutes

You don't need a new wallet to start, though it helps. Empty everything onto a table and work through these steps.

1. Edit first. Pull out expired cards, old receipts, and anything you haven't used in three months.
2. Choose your most-used card. That one goes in the back pocket.
3. Split business from personal. Give each its own side, and keep it that way every time you add a card.
4. Give the essentials a permanent slot. Your driver's license and insurance cards should live in the same place every day.
5. Flatten the paper. Cash goes in the bill compartments, checks behind the card slots, coins and receipts in the zip pocket.
6. Reset once a week. Sunday afternoon works for me. Clear the receipts and put anything that wandered back in its place.
